Women-owned businesses in DeSoto County

02 Mar / 2022

International Women’s Day is March 8. Each year on this day, we take a moment to celebrate social, economic, cultural and political achievements of women all over the globe, including those right here in DeSoto County, Mississippi. Below, we take a look at Melissa Cookston and Tina Tatum – two DeSoto County female small business owners who have persevered and cultivated success in their respective lines of work.

The Mississippi Delta was where Cookston was born and raised, but DeSoto County is where she hangs her hat and her apron. She is the owner of Memphis Barbecue Company located in Horn Lake and also in Dunwoody, Georgia. It is a staple here in DeSoto County that serves up some of the best barbecue in the Mid-South. And, the proof is in the pudding – or the barbecue – because Cookston is a 7-time World Barbecue Champion!

As if that wasn’t enough, she is also the author of two cookbooks packed with down home Southern recipes and a whole lot of kitchen wisdom, and has been a part of several nationally televised shows. Most notable are her appearances on Food Network’s “Chopped Grill Masters” and season 4 of Destination America’s “BBQ Pitmasters.” She has also been named one of America’s most influential barbecue pitmasters and personalities by Fox News. In late 2021, she also opened a 12,000-square-foot barbecue superstore in Southaven called The BBQ Allstars.

Meet Tina Tatum

Tina Tatum, owner of Coffee Central in Southaven and Coffee Central Squared in Hernando, has a deep love for all things local. Tatum’s longing for her own coffee shop came from the places she visited while traveling around the country. When she was making the drive from DeSoto County to Memphis for her coffee fix, she knew it was time to step up and bring something special to the area. Thus, Coffee Central’s flagship in Southaven came to be in 2019, and has since grown to include a second location in Hernando.

Tatum's advice to others interested in opening their own business is to sincerely love the community. This authentic approach, along with hiring those who are kind and serve others well, is what makes her coffee shops so special.

Another DeSoto County female business owner, Cherie Jones of Signs and Stuff, is an inspiration to Tatum. She describes Jones as someone who loves hard and works hard – a magical combo. Jones’ willingness to invest in others personally and spiritually, while keeping standards high and serving her community is what keeps Tatum motivated.

These women and their incredible accomplishments are a testament to women who believe in themselves and work hard to achieve their dreams all over the world. On International Women’s Day and every day, show these local, women-owned establishments some love and support!
