Where to celebrate Read Across America Day in DeSoto County

A tradition started by the National Education Association in 1988, Read Across America Day is a celebration of literature observed annually on March 2, Dr. Seuss’ birthday. Love books? Readers of all ages can join in on the fun! DeSoto County, Mississippi, is home to various spots that serve as an ideal place to enjoy a good book.

Libraries and bookstores
If a quiet spot is what you’re after, one of the five DeSoto County libraries is the answer.

• The M.R. Davis Public Library in Southaven is open 9:30 a.m. to 6 p.m.
• In Horn Lake, M.R. Dye Public Library is open 9 a.m. to 7 p.m.
• The B.J. Chain Public Library in Olive Branch is open 9 a.m. to 7 p.m.
• The James F. Anderson Public Library in Hernando is open 9 a.m. to 7 p.m.
• The Walls Public Library is open 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. 
• The Goodwill Bookstore in Horn Lake is open from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.
• Books-A-Million in Southaven is open from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m.

Coffee shops

• Cozy up with a book where coffee and community meet. You can grab a cup of joe while you read at Coffee Central’s Southaven and Hernando locations
• I Need Coffee in Southaven serves up some yummy pastries that pair well with the novel of your choice.
• At Coffee Beans & Tea Leaves, you can order “crop-to-cup” coffee, which ensures you are getting the freshest product out there. Lattes, cold brews and an assortment of teas are available here, too. 
• Head over to Big Muddy’s Coffee Co in Hernando for some light reading and a delectable scone.
• Pinks in Olive Branch is serving up delicious food items, tea, coffee and more.

Little Free Library

Little Free Library is a nonprofit organization with more than 100,000 libraries spread across the globe. It serves as a free book exchange spot for anyone and everyone to use. Simply place a book in the box and take one that interests you.
