We only get one planet to call home, so it is crucial that we take good care of it, right? If you’re looking to get outside to show your appreciation for our world on Earth Day, which is celebrated annually on April 22, DeSoto County, Mississippi, has multiple opportunities for you.
Get active outdoors
Casual bikers, cyclists and mountain bikers alike can find trails throughout DeSoto County. For example, Bayou Point Mountain Bike Trail located southwest of Hernando offers nearly 6 miles of terrain. If you’re looking for a more relaxed day at the park, Latimer Lakes Park in Horn Lake, Central Park in Southaven, Conger Park in Hernando and the Olive Bark Dog Park offer fun playground activities for the kiddos, walking trails and tables for gathering with friends and family.
Shop local and farm-fresh
If there’s one thing synonymous with springtime – aside from fresh flowers – it’s visiting a nearby farmer’s market. And, what do you know, the opening day of the Hernando Farmers Market falls on Earth Day this year! “Stop and smell the roses” by purchasing a bouquet, or snag specialty baked goods and fresh produce from more than 50 local vendors from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Hernando’s Square.
Reduce, reuse and recycle
You don’t need a green thumb to lend a helping hand this Earth Day. The DeSoto County board of supervisors is hosting its 11th annual Earth Day celebration at the Historic DeSoto County Courthouse the day after Earth Day on April 23. Not only will the event share key information on how to recycle and reduce your carbon footprint, there will also be educational activities for children and an opportunity for you to shred your old documents with Direct Shred in the neighboring Trustmark National Bank parking lot.
Celebrate Earth Day by taking advantage of all the fresh-air and fun DeSoto County offers. See you in the great outdoors!
